Mgahinga gorilla national park is located in the south western part of Uganda at the Uganda- Rwanda and DR. Congo border. It is part of the Virunga massif that crosses through the three countries of Uganda, DR, Congo and Rwanda. Mgahinga gorilla national park has over 80 mountain gorillas but with only one gorilla family group is habituated and open to tourists or travellers to trek it. The only habituated gorilla family here is Nyakagezi gorilla family group.

Mgahinga gorilla national park is the only park in Uganda that when tracking gorillas you can cross the border to either Rwanda or D.R. Congo. The mountain gorillas here also have a tendency of crossing to feed on foreign land just like recently the 20 mountain gorillas that crossed to Uganda from Rwanda. So while at tracking gorillas or hiking mountain Gahinga, you will have the opportunity to be in three countries of Rwanda, Uganda and D.R Congo at the same time without having acquired the visa. What a feeling. Mountain gorillas trekking permit is sold at $700 per person only acquired produced by Uganda wildlife authority.

Apart from Mountain gorillas, this park is also home to the unique primate specie of monkeys known as the golden monkey. This is only found here and Volcanoes national park of Remarkable Rwanda in the whole of East Africa. Trekking golden monkeys need one to purchase a golden monkey trekking permit of $100 per person and permits can be obtained at Uganda wildlife authority which is Uganda’s issuing government agency.
