Day 1: Arrival Kigali & Akagera National Park
On the first day of your 5 Days Rwanda Safari, your Gorilla Cousins Rwanda guide will meet you at the Kigali International Airport and give you a quick briefing of the upcoming schedule for the next few days. You will then board the vehicle and commence the journey to Akagera National Park, a 2-3 hour journey. En route, you will stop in a local Rwandese restaurant for an opportunity to taste some traditional foods.
After lunch, you will proceed to your accommodation at the Park and rest up for the early morning.
Dinner will be served at your accommodation.
Day 2: Game Drive & Volcanoes National Park
On the second day of your 5 Days Rwanda Safari, after an early morning breakfast, you will go for a post-dawn Game Drive into the park. This time of the day is the best for viewing many of the animals, particularly the predators, who usually do their hunting in the early hours of the day, when the sun is not so strong.
After your Game Drive, you will return to your lodge for lunch. After lunch, you will pack up and begin your journey to Volcanoes National Park. You will go directly to your accommodation and check in. If time permits, your GORILLA COUSINS RWANDA guide will take you on a Village Walk. This will give you an opportunity to meet and greet some of the local people, and at the same time be able to look around the communities that exist around the National Park. The walk takes about 2 hours.
Before night fall, you will return to your accommodation for Dinner and an early night.
Day 3: Gorilla Tracking & Ibyiwacu Cultural Center
After an early breakfast on the third day of your 5 Days Rwanda Safaris, your Gorilla Cousins Rwanda guide will take you to the Park Headquarters for the orientation prior to your gorilla Tracking. Here at the HQ center, you will be served coffee and tea while watching a local group performing their drum and dance routine. You will be allocated to one of the 8-person tracking groups and receive a brief orientation of the park and the park etiquette by your assigned Ranger. Afterwards, you will travel a short distance to the spot where you will begin your tracking.
The tracking can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on where the Gorilla Family that you have been assigned to, is exactly. The Gorillas move about the forest, creating new nests to sleep in every evening. Once you meet up with your Gorilla Family, you are permitted to spend up to one hour viewing and photographing. You will be given a packed lunch to bring along; this must be eaten either before or after the Gorilla encounter, as no food is allowed to be consumed when you are with the Gorillas.
Immediately after you have spent the hour with the Gorillas, you will re-unite with your GORILLA COUSINS RWANDA guide and return to your accommodation for a rest. If time permits, your guide will escort you to the Ibyiwacu Cultural Center where you will see local people performing their traditional Wedding Ceremony, in full dress. They will also be dancing and drumming for your entertainment. These people at the center, were previously poachers and through a Community program to preserve the wildlife and find alternate income for these people, this center was set up. It is a unique model that is hoped to be repeated in other communities.
Before night fall, you will be taken back to your accommodation for Dinner.
Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking & Musanze Caves
After an early morning breakfast on the fourth day of your 5 Days Rwanda Safari, you will be taken to the Park Headquarters, as for the Gorilla Tracking. Again, you will be served coffee and tea while you get an opportunity to be entertained by the local drummers and dancers. Afterwards, you will be assigned to your Golden Monkey Tracking group with a Park Ranger; you will then be highlighted on the tracking procedure and protocol for the Park. After this orientation, you will be taken to the location of the start of the tracking into the forest.
Unlike the Mountain Gorilla Tracking, the Golden Monkey tracking does not take as long, in terms of meeting up with the primates, as they are usually feeding in the Bamboo Forest at the base of the mountain. You will get to spend an hour with the Golden Monkeys, after which you will then return to your vehicle and re-unite with the GORILLA COUSINS RWANDA guide, who will escort you back to your accommodation for lunch.
After lunch, you will be taken to the Musanze Caves, a short distance from your accommodation. These caves have been used by local people to live in; now they are an attraction for visitors. The largest of the caves is 2 kilometers in length.
You will be taken back to your accommodation before night fall. Dinner will be at your accommodation.
Day 5: Return to Kigali & Genocide Memorial Center
After breakfast on the last day of your 5 Days Rwanda Safari, , your GORILLA COUSINS RWANDA guide will take you back to Kigali for your onward flight. If time exists, your guide will take you to the Genocide Memorial Center in Kigali, a museum set up to commemorate the Holocaust of 1994. When the time is right, your guide will escort you to the airport to catch your flight.
